Elton John Reveals Complete Vision Loss Following Severe Eye Infection

Legendary musician Sir Elton John has disclosed that he has lost sight in his right eye and has limited vision in his left following a severe eye infection contracted this summer. The 77-year-old EGOT winner's condition has forced him to put his new album plans on hold.

Speaking to Robin Roberts on ABC's "Good Morning America," John revealed the extent of his vision problems: "I unfortunately lost my eyesight in my right eye in July because I had an infection in the South of France. It's been four months now since I haven't been able to see, and my left eye is not the greatest."

The infection's impact has significantly affected his ability to continue working on his upcoming album with longtime collaborator Bernie Taupin. "I can't go into the studio and record because I can't see a lyric for a start," John explained during the interview.

Impact on Current Projects

The vision loss has already begun affecting John's professional commitments. At a recent gala performance of his musical "The Devil Wears Prada" in London, the musician admitted he was physically unable to watch the show, though he could still enjoy listening to the performance.

Despite these challenges, medical experts note that many eye infections are treatable. According to Dr. Charlotte Codina from the University of Sheffield, while common eye infections like conjunctivitis typically resolve without treatment, more serious conditions require immediate medical attention.

Medical Treatment and Recovery

John has indicated that he is receiving treatment for his condition, stating, "There's hope and encouragement that it will be OK." He emphasized that his medical team is "taking initiative to try and get it better," though the recovery process has been notably slow.

The musician's medical team is actively working on his treatment, though specific details about the type of infection have not been disclosed. John described the experience as something that "kind of floored me," noting that his current inability to read or watch anything has significantly impacted his daily life.

Career Impact and Future Plans

Despite these health challenges, John remains optimistic about his future projects. His upcoming documentary, "Elton John: Never Too Late," directed by RJ Cutler and John's husband David Furnish, is set to premiere on Disney+ on December 13. The film chronicles his legendary 50-year career through his final North American show at Dodger Stadium in 2022.

This latest health setback adds to a series of medical challenges John has faced in recent years, including knee replacements and hip surgery. However, he maintains a positive outlook, describing himself as "the luckiest man in the world" during his recent interview.

The music industry icon continues to receive support from fellow artists and fans worldwide as he focuses on his recovery. While his new album project remains temporarily paused, John's team has indicated that he will continue with other commitments as his health permits.
